Robotic Prostatectomy Benefits

Robotic Prostatectomy Benefits – Short-Term and Long-Term

The cutting edge da Vinci® Surgical System has revolutionized prostate cancer treatment with the advent of robotic prostate surgery, also known as robotic prostatectomy. Benefits of this minimally invasive procedure are realized by both the surgeon, through enhanced precision and visualization, and the patient, in short-term and long-term recovery.

Robotic prostatectomy benefits may include:

  • Quicker return to normal activity
  • Shorter hospitalization – most go home the next day
  • Reduced risk of incontinence and impotence
  • Less blood loss
  • Reduced pain – most patients don’t even need narcotics after surgery
  • Fewer complications
  • Less scarring than traditional open surgery
  • Less risk of infection

Robotic Radical Prostatectomy – Revolutionary Technology

Screening for prostate cancer has led to increased public awareness and early detection, as well as a decline in mortality rates. Robotic radical prostatectomy (robotic-assisted laparoscopic removal of the prostate gland) is also a contributing factor to these encouraging trends.

In addition, this state-of-the-art surgical procedure can offer the best chance for complete recovery. Wristed instrumentation, tremor filtration and 3D magnification aid the surgeon in performing one of the most demanding aspects of the procedure – nerve-sparing for preservation of post-operative sexual function and continence. Along with cancer control, these are key elements in follow-up for patients undergoing treatment.

Robot - About - Overview

The da Vinci Surgical System is the first totally "intuitive" laparoscopic surgical robot in existence. It is used for performing many surgical procedures including general laparoscopic surgery, thoracoscopic (chest) surgery, laparoscopic radical prostatectomies and thoracoscopically assisted cardiotomy procedures. Additionally, the da Vinci System is also presently involved in a cardiac clinical trial in the United States for totally endoscopic coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Already more than 210 da Vinci Systems are in use in major hospitals and surgical facilities throughout the United States, Europe and Japan.

The da Vinci Surgical System is changing surgical procedures in three basic ways, which may improve both the patient's experience and surgeon's success:

  • Simplifies many existing minimally invasive surgeries (MIS).
  • Surgical procedures routinely performed today using MIS techniques may be performed more quickly and easily with the da Vinci Surgical System. The System looks and feels like open surgery to the surgeon.
  • Makes difficult MIS operations routine.
  • Some procedures have been adapted for port-based techniques but are extremely difficult and are rarely performed and are performed if at all by only a select number of highly skilled surgeons. The da Vinci Surgical System enables more surgeons at additional institutions to perform these procedures routinely with confidence.
  • Makes new MIS procedures possible in most surgical specialties.
  • A number of surgeries that cannot be performed minimally invasively today may be performed through 1-cm ports by surgeons using the da Vinci Surgical System. The intuitive motion, enhanced 3-D Vision system and a comprehensive suite of EndoWrist® Instruments enable new breakthroughs in surgical techniques.

ROBOTIC PROSTATECTOMY - WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

The robot is an amazing instrument

The robot has been designed to provide minimally invasive surgery that helps the patient recover faster, and increases success rates for the surgeon. You can read about it in this section:

MY TEAM - their EXPERIENCE

The Team are brilliant

Such things are never down to one person alone. You go into theatre as a team, so you had better make sure that it's a good one and a dependable one with depth and experience. Read more about them

I have also had the pleasure of working with some of the finest surgeons around the world. They have taught me much and I am thankful for their comments.
